According to state law, a new graduate cannot work as an Occupational Therapist until a Limited Permit has been issued by the Missouri Board of Occupational Therapy.

In addition, all persons providing occupational therapy services in Missouri must hold a current license or limited permit in order to work.

Applying for a Limited Permit

  1. MOTA LicensureComplete the Request for Confirmation of Examination Registration and Eligibility to Examine Notice form in the NBCOT Candidate Handbook:
    • The Request for Confirmation of Examination Registration and Eligibility to Examine Notice form states that a completed application with fee has been received by PES (the testing company) AND that a transcript with the degree awarded designation on it OR an Academic Credential Verification form completed by the Registrar of the educational institution has also been received.
    • When the completed application and graduation verification and/or transcript are received by PES, the Request for Confirmation of Examination Registration and Eligibility to Examine Notice form is sent to NBCOT for approval. NBCOT reviews and approves the candidate's eligibility status and sends the approved Request for Confirmation of Examination Registration and Eligibility to Examine Notice form to the Missouri Board of OT. NOTE: This process takes approximately 3 weeks to process by PES and NBCOT and only occurs after the application AND the Request for Confirmation of Examination Registration and Eligibility to Examine Notice AND the transcript OR Academic Credential Verification form have been received by PES.
  2. Send your National Certification Examination scores to the Missouri Board of Occupational Therapy:
    • When applying to sit for the National Certification Examination, you may request that your scores be sent automatically to the Missouri Board.
    • If you did not request that your score be sent to Missouri when applying for the exam, you may contact NBCOT at www.nbcot.org to have scores sent to the NBCOT Verification of Certification form available at www.nbcot.org.
  3. Apply for a Limited Permit from the Missouri Board of Occupational Therapy:
    • Complete the Application Form, available from MBOT.
    • Notarize the application form.
    • The permit is usually issued within 2-4 weeks after the application has been received.

Applying for a License

  1. OT LicenseA Limited Permit holder has 60 days following notice of successfully completing the exam to apply for a License. The Limited Permit is extended and then expires after 60 days, and the Limited Permit holder CANNOT work unless holding a valid new license.
  2. To apply for a license, the Limited Permit holder submits the Addendum to Original Application from the limited permit/license application packet to the Missouri Board of OT.
    3. If the Limited Permit holder fails the exam, the Limited Permit holder may renew the Limited Permit one time. The Limited Permit expires 8 weeks after the date of the second exam.

Working with a Limited Permit

  1. When the Limited Permit is received, the new graduate may begin working in Missouri. The Limited Permit holder uses the title OT Limited Permit or OTA Limited Permit. The Limited Permit holder must be supervised by an Occupational Therapist who has been licensed for one year in the state of Missouri.
  2. The Limited Permit is valid from the date of receipt until 8 weeks after the date of the exam.
