MOTA's Advocacy Triumph: Section 504 Protected in Texas vs. Kennedy Lawsuit!
As an organization dedicated to advancing occupational therapy and advocating for disability rights, We are incredibly proud to share a story of significant impact and collective success that unfolded recently. Thanks to the unwavering dedication of our MOTA members and allies, we achieved a monumental victory: the 'Texas vs. Kennedy' lawsuit was officially withdrawn, and crucially, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act was entirely removed, preserving its vital protections for individuals with disabilities.
This was a monumental victory for MOTA and for disability rights advocacy across the country. When the lawsuit initially threatened to undermine Section 504, our community sprang into action. MOTA mobilized swiftly, engaging in targeted outreach, educational campaigns, and direct advocacy with policymakers and stakeholders.
Our efforts included:
-
Issuing a Formal Press Release: On April 10, 2025, MOTA released a statement emphasizing our active defense of Section 504, highlighting its critical role as a cornerstone of disability rights and expressing deep concern over the potential erosion of essential protections. We stressed that "Section 504 is a moral imperative, reflecting our commitment to justice and equity."
-
Direct Advocacy with the Missouri Attorney General's Office: We penned a compelling letter to Attorney General Bailey, urging his office to reconsider its participation in the lawsuit. We highlighted the transformative impact of Section 504 on the lives of our clients, emphasizing that "this law has empowered individuals with disabilities to participate fully in society, free from discrimination and barriers." We urged collaboration to strengthen, rather than challenge, these vital rights.
-
Building Coalitions with Disability and Civil Rights Organizations: MOTA actively reached out to allied organizations, sharing our press release and inviting collaboration. We emphasized that "collaboration with organizations like yours is essential to amplify our collective voice and advocate for the preservation of these critical protections. We are better together!"
-
Mobilizing Our Membership: Most importantly, the incredible dedication of MOTA members was instrumental. Your calls, emails, and tireless advocacy efforts played a crucial role. You amplified the voices of those who rely on Section 504, ensuring that the critical impact of any changes was clearly understood by decision-makers.
Your passionate responses, shared stories, and tireless commitment to protecting these essential rights made all the difference. This outcome is a testament to the power of collective action and the profound impact MOTA members have when we stand together.
